Dodge, as we know it today, began in Detroit in the early 1900s as the Dodge Brothers Company. Brothers Horace and John Dodge opened their machine shop, first building a ball-bearing bicycle before turning their attention to the automotive industry. After an order for a few thousand transmissions, the Dodge brothers caught the attention of Henry Ford. The automotive pioneer was so impressed with the business that he gave the brothers an ownership share in the Ford Motor Company in exchange for exclusive production of Ford engines and other components. The partnership put the Dodge Brothers Company on the map, but it also showed the brothers another opportunity and their potential.

By 1910, the automotive industry flourished, and while business with Ford was good, the Dodge brothers were ready to expand and try their hand at building automobiles. They parted ways with the Blue Oval and, after taking the company public in 1914, debuted their first model-the Hamtramck. The practical vehicle set the stage for other models, including a touring car that launched the company to newfound success and made Dodge the second most popular automotive brand in America.
