As a Ram dealer, we understand the pull of a new Ram truck, especially the classic 1500. This truck has been around since 1981 when it was first introduced as part of the Dodge lineup under the name “Dodge Ram.” It rapidly gained popularity for its durability and performance and won over the hearts and minds of truck enthusiasts. In 2009, the Ram lineup was separated from Dodge, becoming its own brand under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (now Stellantis) umbrella, and the American market hasn’t looked back since, with its last major redesign occurring in 2019.

Ram sold more than 450 thousand Ram Pickups in 2022, and that demand shows no signs of slowing. After all, this is the third most popular truck sold in the USA. With the 2023 model being fazed out and the 2024 model making its debut, we’re all wondering what exactly the differences are between the 2023 and 2024 model years for the Ram 1500. What will this year’s lineup of new trucks shape up to be like? What are the similarities? What are the differences?

The Differences Between the 2023 Ram 1500 and the 2024 Ram 1500

Stepping Back From Diesel and Paving the Way for Electrification

The primary distinction between the 2023 and 2024 Ram 1500 models lies in the engine options, specifically because Ram is removing the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine for the 2024 model. Although this engine was popular for its fuel efficiency and torque, Ram is purportedly ditching it to make room for future improvements in electric vehicles.

Speaking about the 2023 model, Ram’s CEO, Mike Koval Jr., said, “As we quickly pivot toward an electrified future, we wanted to celebrate this last EcoDiesel milestone by offering our loyal light-duty diesel enthusiasts a final opportunity to order the truck they love.” This temporary gap in the engine lineup will allow Ram to explore even bigger and better EV options in the future! It means that if you’re married to the diesel engine, you will want to stick with a new, or new to you, 2023 Ram 1500.

Tailgate Ajar Alert Included on All Trims

The next thing that’s different between the latest generations of the Ram 1500 is the inclusion of a tailgate ajar alert light on all new 2024 trims. This feature alerts drivers when they have left their tailgate unlatched and is highly beneficial as it enhances safety and prevents the risk of items falling out of the bed during transit. It also improves vehicle security by deterring theft and protects the vehicle from damage. Mostly, it offers drivers additional peace of mind by confirming that the truck is properly secured.

The Return of the Warlock Package

This will be the final year Ram offers the TRX trim on the Ram 1500. As such, many were worried about a gap in the truck’s off-roading offerings. Ram is reintroducing the Ram 1500 Tradesman Warlock, a value-centric off-road package to fill this potential hole in the lineup. The Tradesman Warlock was initially introduced in 2019 as an affordable, off-road-oriented package for the Ram Classic. This package is being extended to the fifth-generation Ram 1500, built on the existing Tradesman trim.

This new Ram 1500 package will include a 3.6-liter V6 eTorque mild-hybrid engine with an optional 5.7L V8. It’s got features like a one-inch suspension lift, an electronically-locking rear differential, underbody skid plates, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires with traction to handle even the most challenging terrain. If you want a truck that looks super cool on the outside, the Warlock isn’t going to disappoint. You can get unique graphics and black exterior trim to satisfy all your souped-up trucking dreams. Ram has branded this as a cost-effective option for off-road enthusiasts, and we couldn’t agree more.

What Features Have Remained the Same?

The Ram 1500’s Other Engine Choices Remain in the Lineup

Besides the diesel engine being cut from the lineup, most of the Ram 1500’s power specifications remain the same this year. The 3.6L eTorque Pentastar V6 engine delivers 305 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. A 5.7L eTorque HEMI V8 engine that creates 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque is also available. On specific trims, drivers can opt to equip their 2024 Ram 1500 with a supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8. This engine is helping the Ram 1500 maintain its position as the most powerful mass-produced pickup in its class. It puts out a staggering 702 hp and delivers 650 lb-ft of torque.

The Aerodynamic Design

Across the industry, the Ram 1500 is known for having one of the smoothest rides available on any pickup truck, and this year’s model isn’t any different, offering amazingly smooth transportation to drivers. Ram has special technology that they employ to ensure this, combining an Active Air Dam and an Air Suspension System to great effect.

The Air Dam activates when the Ram 1500 gets up to 30 MPG on the road. It serves to reduce the drag coefficient by automatically dropping a special panel down on the front underside of the truck. This extra wind-blocking panel extends 2.5 inches downward, and while it might not seem like a lot, the boost in aerodynamics is significant. While this is happening, active grille shutters collapse, so airflow is directed smoothly under and over the nose of the truck.

When you go a little faster and start to climb up to highway speeds, the 1500’s air suspension system activates. This feature is called Active-Level Four Corner Air Suspension because it simultaneously lowers the entire truck’s body down over the wheels. This shortens the Ram 1500’s profile and lets the wind glide smoothly over the top to reduce drag.

Comfortable Cabin Packed With an Array of Comfort Features

When you think of a new Ram 1500, you probably picture it covered in mud or at a job site. Maybe it’s even towing a boat or trailer. We think of these vehicles as workhorses first and transportation second. We often forget that these vehicles come equipped with some of the most modern technological and comfort advancements. So even if you’re planning to put the Ram 1500 through its paces hauling and towing, you can still hop into the cabin to relax after a long day’s labor or adventuring.

The spacious interior with well-appointed upholstery makes for the perfect place to recline. If your Ram 1500 comes with the available dual-pane panoramic sunroof, you can stargaze with your loved ones for maximum relaxation. All models of the new 1500 come equipped with the latest infotainment technology as well, so you can stay connected no matter where you go. Use the large digital screen to connect your smartphone and play music or listen to audiobooks on the trail or highway.
